Day 2 dubbed as the “Sustainability Day” of the Lakme Fashion Week highlights the brands and designers who work towards building an ethical collection for a better, more eco-friendly world. These young designers are the need of the now and the future of our world and the fashion week nurtures these designers by pushing mindful fashion and bringing conscious designer labels forward.

The phenomenal day which brings unmatchable talent and skillful designs together, has a permanent spot on the Lakme Fashion Week x Fashion Design Council of India’s schedule. It is a platform that continuously pushes towards transparency in the fashion supply chain and showcases various ways on how clothes can be produced and consumed globally. Challenging the usual ways of fashion, these designers and labels strive hard towards creating contemporary and ready to wear sustainable fashion that aims to strengthen the livelihoods of artisans, keep the old traditions alive and prove life changing.

This year’s fashion week saw exceptional collaborations and showcases from some of the most renowned designers and labels of the industry. Scroll ahead for a roundup of all the highlights from the collections that can best be described as one of a kind.

The Circular Design Challenge

The opening of the Sustainable day at Lakme Fashion Week featured R|Elan “Fashion for Earth” presenting the largest sustainable fashion award in association with the United Nations Environment Programme. The circular design challenge showcased six design entrepreneurs, revealing some amazing creativity by incorporating circularity in their design demonstrating a positive impact on the environment and the society. The platform empowers young talent to witness more such sustainable, scalable and circular concepts. The Fashion industry being the key factor in contributing towards pollution globally, the challenge strives to transform the fashion ecosystem and drive sustainable transition by providing a platform to ingenious solutions. From upcycled denims, recycled tote scarfs, reconstruction through deconstructed garments to zero waste garments, sustainable textiles and handcrafting techniques, the young talents included it all.


PETA India

The new PETA India vegan fashion look book starred the celebrity couple Milind Soman and his wife Ankita Konwar, portraying a day in PETA’s most vocal ambassadors life, the couple demonstrated how to look fashionably killer sans any animal cruelty. While wearing vegan they wish to impart the message that with so many wonderful Vegan shoes, bags, and jackets available today, nobody has to hurt animals for fashion and be compassionate and kind towards them. Featuring some trendy vegan ensembles from brands like Proyog and Outhouse etc. the collection included outfits fit for every occasion, from office wear, leisure and athleisure to edgy date night outfits, Milind looked totally stylish while Ankita looked effortlessly elegant in flouncy and asymmetrical summer silhouettes. The look book proved to be extremely innovative and serves as an inspiration, encouraging the viewers to go leather and fur free when choosing fashion for the future.

Cocccon

The Cocccon label is recognized globally as the most respected luxury label offering signature, peace organic silk garments and scarves splashed with amazing colours, patterns and prints. The aesthetically pleasing label unveiled a new line of futuristic, space age like garments made from biodegradable materials having no trace of negative impact on earth at the LFW x FDCI this year. Inspired by the principle of Ahimsa, the colours of the collection were colourful and vibrant. The silhouettes included breezy summer styles from ruffled necklines and draped lungis to pleated blouses and one shoulder sleeves. The designer played with abstract geometry in bright hues, experimenting with different shapes and forms raising the fashion quotient of the overall collection.

All About India

All About India features three impeccable sustainable fashion collections that stands for everlasting and ethical style. The three designers created glamour using an eco-friendly process and techniques which is fair to the planet and its people.

Talking about Chola, the label started by Sohaya Misra is completely conscious from its roots and uses recycled and upcycled biodegradable usage to make its garments. The labels free cutting methods are evident in its free size silhouettes like it’s detachable hoods and sleeves etc. With numerous mix and match looks the collection included everything from striped robes and high collared blouses to comfortable tunics and flowy maxi skirts.

Huemn, the brainchild of Pranav Mishra and Shyam Shetty has redefined luxury and brought about a fashion revolution with its delicate handcrafted pieces and embroidery techniques. Bringing its unisex collection to life, the label included everything from denim bikers jacket, knit pants and matching sweatshirts to striped contrasting shirts and sweater dresses, having dual sensibilities in every piece. Redefining fashion statements the collection highlighted intense 3D placement embroidery along with embossed parts on its garments. The stylish appeal and memorable pieces make it a go to choice for all millennials out there.

Gaurav Khanjio’s label Khanjio offers fashion forward looks for men and women , with his new collection he marked a unisex line using upcycled garments inspired by the beauty of nature. Bringing about a burst of colour along with an oversized silhouette he took the fashion week by storm.

Payal Pratap

Payal Pratap’s new collection “View With A Room” explores a myriad of emotions and the feeling of nostalgia reflecting a sense of limitless freedom without being bound. Communicating through shades of vibrant pinks and browns his collection included everything from maxi , warps and saree dress to checked jackets, wool stripes and delicate sequin embroidery numbers.

Ritu Kumar launched her Spring Summer 2021 collection consisting of environmentally-friendly, organic, soya fabric sarees. In sync with the season and her constant endeavour to expand the horizons for sustainable solutions. A perfect amalgamation of luxurious yet soothing fabrics, the collection reflects modern minimalism, steeped in craftsmanship and the brand's signature blend of modern silhouettes. With a mix and match of floral prints, patchwork with different laces, and geometric designs. Each piece from the collection aims to revive the elegance that each woman exudes, and comprises statement styles, the perfect way to end Day 2 in the most authentic way possible.
